I chose to focus on the levels of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere, particularly that of carbon dioxide emissions by Singapore. I played around with visual balance in the infographic, creating asymmetrical balance by placing entities of vary ‘weights’ on either side of a pivot point, in this case the section of information on electrical generation.

I attempt to produce harmonies in the artwork by introducing similar of information representation, i.e. usage of icons, the same percentage systems and information layouts. There is contrast in the sizes of ‘chunks’ of information, the different sizes of text, and also the different lengths of the curved percentage bars. The presence of harmonious and contrasting elements strive to create unity in the art piece.

There is also usage of emphasis, as bold text and large font size are used to denote the title of the infographic and also the grand total of carbon emissions in Singapore. The section on electrical generation is also given focus, as the descriptive texts are relatively larger and there are graphics not seen in the other sections of information. The isolation of the title also lends some emphasis to it.

The laws of prägnanz are also utilised here, such as proximity, to signify different clumps of similar information. There is also application of similarity, as the similar structure of information sections allow viewers to see the relations among items.

Here’s assignment 4! Pretty  satisfied with this one I must say. I tried to capture the energy and dynamism of youth through movement and solid lines and colours. The concept was on social awareness and activity of youth, particularly through music.

In terms of experimentation of colour schemes, I tried gritty, warm colour combinations to give the postcard some striking tones, some ‘oompfh’, but I felt that the overall effect fell short of my expectations and made the composition less defined, somewhat ‘muddy’ in fact.

I also tried singular colours of different brightness, saturation and hue, but felt that more contrast was needed to bring out the movement of the leaping guitarist. I eventually settled on a good combination of primary colours, white background and solid black lines, what you see in the picture on the right.

Most of the time, I was just laughing at myself. You’ll get the idea.

Close-ups

1. I like the composition in the first picture, what with the lines mapped out by the lockers, the intersection between the lockers and the ceiling, and the ceiling itself. The canted view lends to the emphasis of angles too.
2. The second one is in sepia, with focus set on the half-opened locker door. The blurring of the image towards the bottom-left periphery lends to the emphasis, as with the canted angle of the shot.
3. The third picture is another view of the lockers from a short distance away, depicting the angular lines and uniformity of the lockers, with a bit of juxtaposition by the half-opened locker door.
4. This is another view of the lockers, this time from the left.

Short to Medium Distance

1. One of my favourites, I dig the perspective of the shot, the similarities in colours of the desk and chair with the lockers, and also the contrast between the lockers and the ceiling/end of corridor.
2. A medium range shot of the lockers in sepia.
3. I like the lines provided by the railing, and the division it introduces into the shot, seemingly creating a less-lighted portion of the lockers in the lower portion.

So people, prepare to Jack in and Trip out.

It’s an abstraction  of Singapore’s attempt at reproducing a much-better known artefact of British culture. For those not in the know, it’s the Singapore Flyer.

Well, the main issue here is the abstraction process. It’s just not much of an abstraction process, rather more of a “what do I put in or leave out” type of process going on. I was thinking too much of the end-product during the conceptualisation I guess.

Comments on this piece are generally favourable, so yay to that. I will definitely be keeping this KIV, to work out a better abstraction.

I’ll be keeping in mind all the critiques and comments for version 2.0

I haven’t had the benefits of constructive criticism from my tutorial class, because I missed the tutorial. My bad.

Anyways, the basic premise is to do with tenacity, and it had sprung from a childhood memory I had. My mom used to buy treats for the family once a week, and kept them from me until either the family was together to enjoy them, or I had finished my schoolwork. But more often than not, I always found the places she stashes the goods, during which she always complained that I was like an unrelenting rat, sniffing out for the ‘prize’ until I finally got my hands on it. She was right in that sense, and me being born in the year of the Rat helped her case, naturally.

The image has my initials “KC” integrated into it. The chewed through box has the K, and the donut, well, you get the point.

Initial drafts and the like will be posted up ASAP.

After a couple of failed blog creation attempts, a broken down laptop with my essential files and a lost folder of NM2208 files, this post is definitely a reassuring step in the right direction. Look forward to more Visual Communication goodness in the weeks to come.
